Exercise 6: The Royal We

Write a first-person-plural narration of an event from the POV of a very close-knit couple.

The hunt for Jiufeng led us deep into the carnival district.

At this time of night, the rides had shut down many hours ago, the lights from the AUGUR-assisted shooting galleries long faded to black.

We dashed past the arcades, our footfalls soft as falling leaves, following the flashing arrow at the center of the AUGUR display, an indicator of where our quarry lay.

The data flow increased as we neared the carousel. The bar indicating Vapor levels had gone from mild green to imperial red. Our biometric sensors picked up our syncopated hearts beating in tandem.  We activated the fulus and prepared to breach.

A sharp spike of Vapor. The display flickered out. Upon return, the HUD was grainy with visual snow. Yet through the static, we could glimpse the unmistakable shape of the Jiufeng, perched atop the carousel, it’s nine beaked heads twisting and snapping at one another. It raised its heads in unison and let out a feedback-screech.

All at once, the display winked out. Our connections failed. Biometric data and display lost to static and snow. The sudden loss of our AUGUR-senses—the loss of each other—left us isolated. Alone. We collapsed. Cried out. Beat our fists.

But we were cut off. Disconnected from each other and from the rest of the Tianxia network. It was the loneliness sensation either of us had ever felt.
